Please note: you are welcome to stay for the duration of this event, but it is not required. Even if you pop in for one section of the event, we are sure that you will get something out it! This event is aimed at Life Science students interested in making a positive difference in their future career. It will feature external speakers and a panel discussion on current global challenges impacting life sciences industries, and ways to make a difference. If you would like to explore your career options, this is the event for you.
These speakers and panellists are from a range of backgrounds which include companies such as Bayer UK, Labcycle, Forestry England, Wilder Sensing and Ambios. Life Science: Careers for Change Makers is an event where you can explore different career avenues that truly make a difference to our local and global community. Our panel discussion will explore exciting trends and opportunities in Life Science, offering insights into the skills and mindsets needed, and the opportunities to stand out in today's evolving job market.
Along with having a variety of companies, we close this event off with talks from current societies at the University of Bristol to ensure you have a clear next step when leaving this event. There will also be time for networking with our guest speakers while enjoying a light lunch (free food and drink!). There will be gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options.
This event counts towards the 'workshops and courses' requirements of the Bristol PLUS Award credit.
This Careers in Life Sciences: Careers for Change-Maker's event has been designed by students for students, as a collaboration between the three Life Science Sustainability Champions from the school of Biological Science, CMM and PPN.

Speaker profiles:
Carly Santer, Strategic Advisor, Pharma and Healthcare Sustainability at Bayer UK
Carly studied Applied Genetics (BSc) at the University of Liverpool and completed her PhD in Immunology at the University of Bristol. She has worked in clinical research for 15 years and she was Bayer’s first Impact Officer in 2023, where she aligned her objectives with the framework of the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015. Carly now leads a team optimising Bayer’s global clinical trial design for sustainability, which includes reducing waste and carbon emissions and increasing diversity in clinical trials. Through her work, she aims to drive positive impact through sustainability in the life sciences sector.
Imogen Turner, Business Develop Manager at Wilder Sensing
Imogen studied Environmental Science (BSc) at Oxford Brookes University before going on to study an MSc in Environmental Policy and Management at the University of Bristol. She is now a Business Development Manager at Wilder Sensing. Imogen oversees sales and partnerships with Regenerative Agriculture, Solar, Mining, Water, and Food and Beverage companies.
Wilder Sensing is a nature-tech start-up specialising in avian bioacoustics. Using AI and ML, Wilder Sensing allow Ecologists, Investors, Land Managers, Farmers and more to understand which species are present on-site. Providing a solution that is low cost, scalable and long-term, we provide a solution to the lack of tangible species-level data that companies need to effectively manage their on-site biodiversity.
Helen Liang, CTO and Co-Founder of LabCycle
Helen completed her MRes in Sustainable Chemical Technology and PhD in Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Bath. She co-founded LabCycle and works as Chief Technology Officer (CTO).
LabCycle is a company that focuses on reducing the amount of plastic waste produced by laboratories and healthcare. It is the first company on the market to recycle hazardous laboratory plastic waste through application of bespoke decontamination and recycling technologies in a circular economy mechanism. LabCycle’s mission aligns with the sustainable development goals to build the infrastructure for sustainable research in the healthcare sector.
Simon Roper, Director and Co-Founder at Ambios
Simon studied Zoology (Bsc) at the University of Bristol, and went on to complete a Master of Philosophy on Badger Ecology at the University of Exeter. He is the Co-founder and Director of Ambios. His work focuses on helping people gain practical experience in nature recovery, rewilding, and exploring species re-introductions.
Ambios is a non-profit organisation that provides traineeships, volunteering opportunities and practical education for people aspiring to work in nature conservation. Ambios prides itself in exploring new, exciting and successful ways of formally and informally engaging people with nature.
Christine Meakin (Learning Supervisor), Sophie Nash (Programme Manager) and Ellen Whitby at Forestry England
Sophie studied Spatial Design: Interiors and Landscapes (BSc) at Falmouth University, and after graduating, she went on to work at an architectural firm in Bath, working on designing new housing developments and heritage restoration projects. She joined the team at Westonbirt, the National Arboteum as a Programme Manager in 2010 and since then has been responsible for overseeing many transformational projects at the Arboteum. In 2018, she created the Green Team due to a feeling that more needed to be done in the company as an environmental organisation. This team involves representatives from various departments that work together to come up with ideas and solutions for improving sustainability practices at Westonbirt and reducing their negative impact on the planet. Some of these projects have been: introducing food waste collections, trialling different materials for signage and raising awareness with the wider staff team and visitors of their work and impact.
Forestry England is the Uk’s largest land manager, looking after 1,500 of the countries forests. Forestry England works in partnership with the government charities and private companies to shape landscapes for people, timber and wildlife. Their goal is to provide homes for wildlife, make the air cleaner to breathe and produce sustainable timber.
