Climate Anxiety and Eco Anxiety (distress as a result of the climate and ecological crises) is rising, especially amongst young people. This distress can manifest in a number of ways, causing feelings of grief, fear, anger, anxiety and depression. At the SU we recognise that this is a completely reasonable and logical response to the climate crises and a genuine cause of anxiety and stress amongst our students and staff.
Often these feelings are compounded by social media and current affairs sites, so it can be difficult to disengage. However, taking personal action (even small-scale) on sustainability has been shown to help alleviate climate anxiety. For example, spending time in nature can provide both mental and physical wellbeing benefits.
These feelings are increasingly shared by many, and you don’t have to tackle them alone. Throughout the year the SU and University aim to run events and talks where you can engage with sustainability and meet others using action to build resilience. As well as these events, we have compiled some extra resources and tips on how to manage and alleviate feelings of Climate Anxiety and Eco Anxiety, some of which have been recommended by our students and staff.
