Black Students' Guide to Bristol

Monday 02-09-2024 - 09:00

One thing that is certain when you move to university is that you will miss something from home. This could be your favourite restaurant which knows what you want before you even order, or your hairdresser who just gets it right every single time. When moving to university, it is often a concern for students that they won’t be able to find these things. However, with the diverse culture that can be found in Bristol, you inevitably will.

We have been working with the Black Students’ Network to make your lives easier when you move here and ensure you can find everything you are looking for. Check out their Guide to Bristol right here!

Hair

For men, Supertonic Barbers is the place to go! Located in Montpelier, it is just a 25-minute walk from Bristol city centre. To avoid disappointment, it is recommended that you book online to guarantee both a haircut and the barber you want.

If you’re looking for hair supplies, the network recommends Malik supermarket for women. Just under a 20-minute walk from the city centre on Stapleton Road, Malik supermarket sells hair supplies such as extensions and hair products. If you are looking for somewhere closer to university, Cosmetics Republic at The Horsefair sells hair supplies too.

Food✨

Some city centre recommendations:

Fruit and veg stall, Merchant Street, Broadmead.

They sell plantain and scotch bonnet peppers.

Food by Sophie, 1-15 Wine St, Bristol BS1 2BB.

A great Caribbean takeaway food stall

Out of the centre:

Malik supermarket, Stapleton Road

They sell African and Caribbean food ingredients and are roughly a 25-minute walk outside of the centre.

Rice and Things, Cotham

Close to the university, it has been described as selling Jamaican food that is “so good”. Definitely worth a visit!

Agape

Take bus 49 towards Staple Hill from the town centre and you'll be there 15 minutes. This place sells authentic West African dishes that feel homemade.

Caribbean Croft, Stokes Croft

Carribbean Croft sells all the meats you could ever need including oxtail, goat and jerk chicken.

Wingstop

Wingstop has a few locations across the city serving wings as hot as you like!

Stapleton Road

There is a huge variety of African/Caribbean restaurants, barbers, salons and food markets along Stapleton Road. If you are living in university halls of residence you may want to walk, catch a bus or catch a train from Clifton Down station directly to Stapleton Road. It's definitely worth the visit.

The Black Students’ Network is hosting a meet-up after Welcome Week. This is your chance to find out about upcoming campaigns like Black History Month and meet other Black students in the Bristol community. Full details will be found on our What's On webpage soon, and their Instagram.
