Bristol SU Statement on Tuition Fee Increase

Friday 14-03-2025 - 11:09

Last week the UK Government confirmed that maintenance loans and tuition fees for UK students studying in England will increase in line with inflation. Today, the University of Bristol have confirmed that the increase will apply to all students from 1 August 2025, applying to new students, current students and applicants who deferred their place. The university have provided more information here.

Whilst we welcome the increase to maintenance loans which is long overdue, we’re angry that students are bearing the brunt of funding gaps in Higher Education. It’s particularly frustrating that this will impact current students who have already started their course, and wouldn’t have been aware of these potential changes.

The Higher Education sector is in a critical state financially but education should be accessible to all. Placing the financial burden on students, both home and international, is not a sustainable solution and will only increase student poverty. The government should be doing more to address these funding issues.

We are standing with you through this and won’t stand by while you’re left struggling. As your Officer Team, we have prioritised addressing student poverty, and we will continue to uphold this commitment. We are actively lobbying both sector-wide and nationally through RGSU (Russell Group Students’ Unions) and NUS (National Union of Students) to further increase maintenance loans. At the university level, we will continue advocating for more bursaries, funds, and affordable food and laundry options — anything that can help alleviate the financial burden on students.
