Thursday 15-08-2024 - 09:00

If you are joining us in September, you may not have had much of an opportunity to explore Bristol before.

The good news is that there is plenty to explore - whether you're doing so solo, with friends, or through our Welcome Week events. Bristol is a diverse city and is filled with green spaces, an incredible art scene and a rich history. If you are as excited as we are about exploring the city, you might not know where to even start! Not to worry though, we have put together a comprehensive guide of the Top 10 things you must go and see or do...

1. A Street Art Tour of Stokes Croft 🎨

If you are a fan of street art, then Stokes Croft is the perfect place for you. Explore the vibrant streets which are known for their colourful murals and graffiti. We recommend taking a walk through this wonderful neighbourhood to see the creative expression that defines Bristol.

Guess what? We are running Street Art Tours from 9 September until 12 September, with a Postgraduate Street Art Tour taking place on 11 September. Make sure to find out more here and book the tour that is right for your Welcome Week plans!

2. Explore the Harbourside ⛵

Discover Bristol’s iconic harbourside area which is home to lively cafes, bars, restaurants, food stalls and attractions. You can take a stroll along the waterfront, enjoy a boat tour or indulge in some of the fantastic food on offer. Bristol's independent cinema Watershed, as well as the gallery Arnolfini, are also overlooking the Harbourside. Make sure to check it out!

During Welcome Week, we are hosting a Social Dock Run on 9 September so you can explore this wonderful area with other new students. If running isn't for you, you could also join us on a Harbour Boat Tour on either the 9 September or 10 September.

If you fancy seeing the Harbour lit up at night, why to come along to our Pop Boat Party?

3.A trip to the Clifton Suspension Bridge 🌉

The view from the Suspension Bridge is not to be missed! Start your adventure by crossing the bridge to see views of the Avon Gorge. Once you are back, take a trip to the observatory and grab a ticket for the viewing deck. After crawling through a narrow cave, you will reach a viewing deck with an incredible view of the bridge itself.

4. Immerse Yourself in the Music Scene 🎸

Throughout Welcome Week you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in Bristol’s music scene at a variety of club nights. However, the city is also well-known for its range of live gigs and concerts that take place throughout the year. Bristol is home to both intimate and large venues, with music to suit all tastes. Recent performers include The Streets, Erykah Badu and Loyle Carner!

If you ever want to know who is scheduled to perform in the city, and when, then take a look online through Headfirst, Skiddle or Visit Bristol (as well as UK ticket platforms).

5. SS Great Britain âš“

Step back in time and visit the SS Great Britain, a historic steamship that revolutionised maritime travel. Once on board, you can explore the decks, learn about its history and gain an insight into Bristol’s maritime heritage.

6. St Nicholas’ Market 🥙

If you see yourself as a bit of a foodie or fashion lover, this market is for you. The market has an incredibly vibrant atmosphere with a bustling hub of food stalls, independent shops and artisan crafts. This is a great opportunity for you to pick up some decorations for your new room or try foods from around the world!

7. Explore Clifton Village ☕

Located close to the Suspension Bridge is Clifton Village. This is one of the most picturesque parts of Bristol, known for its Georgian architecture and charming boutiques. You can uncover hidden courtyards, browse independent shops, and enjoy a leisurely afternoon tea in one of the many cafes.

8. Attend a performance at the Bristol Old Vic 🎭

Catch a performance at the Bristol Old Vic, one of the oldest theatres in the UK! The venue is home to classical plays and innovative performances, promising an evening of unforgettable entertainment.

You might also want to catch a musical at the Hippodrome, with student deals frequently available on all your favourite shows such as The Lion King and Hamilton.
