"The impact of the cost-of-living crisis on Bristol students is deeply concerning. It continues to pose a threat to student wellbeing, and negatively impacts not only their university experiences but everyday life.
"As food, transport, energy bills, rent, and other essentials continue to increase, existing inequalities widen. That’s why the cost of living remains one of our top collective priorities this year. As your officer team, we’re committed to lobbying on your behalf, both locally and nationally, and working closely with the University – to get you the support you need, and to mitigate the impact of this crisis.
"A recent survey carried out by the National Union of Students (NUS) found that 96% are making cutbacks, with over half spending less on food. With this crisis in mind, and in a positive step towards making expenses more feasible, we have already worked with the University to secure cheaper food options for you on campus.
"These will be available all year round, and hot food options are mainly vegan and gluten-free. They include:
“We’ve also secured the extension of the free shuttle bus to Coombe Dingle Sports Complex on Wednesdays. There will be later running times, and the addition of a stop on the downs, helping both players and spectators.
"Recognising that the joining fees, trips, and other costs of student groups can be prohibitively expensive for some students we have increased The Activity Hardship Fund from last year. You can now apply for one grant per academic year which can go up to £150. You can read more about this, and find out how to apply, here.
"We know that these steps do not minimise the extent to which the cost-of-living crisis affects all of you. But, it’s a start to all of the work that we’re doing. We will keep you updated throughout the year, and you can see what we’re up to and what we’ve been working on right here."
