Statement on Metal Works

Wednesday 21-08-2024 - 15:58

We’re aware that there are a number of students who have been allocated accommodation in Metal Works, a new development in South Bristol, and their move-in date will be after Welcome Week.

Although this is the date that has been advertised, we’re disappointed that there are students who will be unable to take part in Welcome Week this year. It’s unacceptable that this wasn’t made clearer to students at what can already be a stressful time for them, and particularly for students who were allocated Metal Works as accommodation rather than having chosen it.

Welcome Week is an important time of year for community building and starting to create connections to the city and University.

Since we’ve heard how students are being affected, we’ve been putting pressure on the University to make sure that students living in Metal Works don’t feel left out of social events and that there are reasonable alternative offered to them to help them transition into university life.

If you have a question about this situation, you can speak to the university student services team by contacting student-services@bristol.ac.uk

We’ve also pulled together some FAQs about our Bristol SU Welcome Week programme. Whilst Welcome is the start of your time at University, there’s plenty more that happens throughout the year to help you to meet other students and get involved in life outside of your studies.

Do you have any events on after Welcome Week?

Yes! We run a range of different events throughout the term and have plenty of exciting opportunities for you to get involved and meet other students.

These range from crafty afternoons, live music, local day trips and a huge vintage thrift sale! Keep an eye out on our Instagram and the What’s On Page on our website to stay up to date.

Who can I contact with questions about my accommodation?

You can contact the University of Bristol Accommodation team by calling 0117 374 6637 (Monday-Friday, 9am-4.30pm) or by emailing student-accomodation@bristol.ac.uk

Please note that they are currently dealing with a high volume of calls which may mean a slightly longer wait than usual.

If I am in Bristol before 14 September, can I still attend Welcome Week events?

Yes! If you are an incoming University of Bristol student, you won’t need to be officially moved into your accommodation to attend our events.

You can check out our full events programme including the Ultimate Freshers Ticket Pass and Welcome Fair.

Please note that students moving into Metal Works should select the Monday night Move-In Party (East / West / Non-Halls).

How do I get to the SU from Metal Works?

We are a multi-site SU, split across The Richmond Building on Queens Road and Senate House on Tyndall Avenue.

Our sites are a 40-45 minutes walk from Metal Works and a 15-20 minute cycle.

You can catch a 20 minute train from Bedminister Train Station to Clifton Down Station. Clifton Down is a 10-15 minute walk to both our Senate House and Richmond Building sites.

Buses run regularly from Bedminister Parade to The Centre, a 15-20 minute walk away from our sites. You can find out more about bus travel in Bristol
