We moved the SU to the heart of campus in Senate House and revamped our website to make finding information and services easier than ever. This change has been a huge success for Bristol SU, come and visit us on the 5th Floor of Senate house the next time you are in 🤗
Around campus we have lobbied for more sensory spaces and will be launching our second Sensory Room this term. Also, you may have heard the Swap Shop in Living Room 1 in Senate House got a glow up. This new space provides students with an opportunity to swap clothes, take food essentials and give back within the student community, while also promoting a sustainable incentive. Outside of Senate House we have also revamped the prayer and relaxation room in the Richmond Building.
Overall, we have increased the number of student groups that book spaces with us, reaching more students from different backgrounds! It has been great to see so many students take advantage of some of the amazing free spaces we have on offer! To check out these spaces, look at the new tool on our website that showcases all the spaces we have on offer including their availability here! 🌟
Did you know that this year 70% of the events ran by Bristol SU were free of charge and over half required no booking. By making more events cost friendly, we listened to what you had to say in last years Big Bristol SU Survey!
During Welcome Week, we also reviewed our events schedule and offered more events that were of a higher quality such as paddleboarding or craft workshops with external experts. This was all alongside our usual schedule of over 100 other events, including club nights, film screenings and multiple meet up events held across the two weeks. Overall, we saw over 18,000 of you join us for a welcome event making it one of the biggest freshers in the country! But, for 2025 we want to go bigger again, and need your help – so fill out this year’s survey here to shape your year as a Bristol Student.
But it doesn’t stop there, our Give it a Go! campaign finished with a record 395 events run over the two weeks of welcome, of which all were free and run by 213 different student groups. These free events allow students from all over the university to try out some of the activities run by our student groups, from Rugby to Ju-Jitsu, there was something for everyone! You can check out the full list of Give it a Go! Events happening for refreshers 🤾♂️
After concluding the Representation Review, next year we are launching new leadership roles focused on liberation organising. Called the Community Organisers, these new paid roles will be working closely with the SU and the FTO Team to take more action on liberation around campus.
Keep an eye out for more details on these roles coming soon as we start to think about TB2 Elections!
Your elected officers have made tackling student poverty a top priority again this year and as mentioned, 70% of the events ran by Bristol SU were free!
Our development team worked closely with the Officer team to increase the amount of funding available from the Activity Hardship Fund from £150 to £200 per student. So far we have allocated nearly £31,00 to students across two grant funding period. Another grant funding period is coming in February, where you can apply for a grant to put towards helping you access activities offered by our student groups. Whether this be some additional support towards travel, new equipment or joining fees, your SU is here to make sure many of you can take part in activities while at university.
Furthermore, other incentives such as our Take a Plate event, the re-launch of the Swap Shop and reductions in the cost of food on campus have all been successful campaigns that the SU have worked on since last year. You can read this article which outlines all the cost-of-living incentives from your SU this year here 💵
We’ve recruited nearly 900 academic reps, trained 452 of these reps, launched the Academic Rep Hub, and are working closely with the university to represent your academic interests. In November, 84 reps joined us for 'RepCon' where students got together to share best practices and network.
Furthermore, in collaboration with Mia Stevens (Undergraduate Education Officer), we ran ran three focus groups on student experiences of assessment feedback in November. This research supports the Officers’ priority to improve academic satisfaction at the University! Look out for the report on these findings coming soon 🖋️
This year we have increased the amount of content with our officers in on our social channels, especially Instagram. Also, you may have noticed that we have changed the officer update emails so they now come from your named officers and increased the number of images of the FTO team in these emails 📧
Once the officer team were elected last year, we took them through the Big Bristol SU Survey data to help shape their priorities which directly correlated with the UEB agreement.
So, your voice in this survey really matters and with participation you could help shape your SU for years to come!
