Welcome Week Transport

Thursday 15-09-2022 - 14:34

We want everyone to have a fun and safe Welcome Week 2022, that’s why we’ve pulled together this helpful guide to transport across Bristol.

Whether you’re heading to club nights or navigating your way to the Downs for our Welcome Fair, there are plenty of ways for you to travel to Bristol SU events.

The Transport Hub (Stoke Bishop North Village)

For students travelling from Stoke Bishop into the City Centre, we are running a FREE bus service during Welcome Week, which will run to and from each club night event from The Transport Hub.

Club night bus services include:

  • Sunday 18 September: Stoke Bishop to SWX
  • Monday 19 September: Stoke Bishop to SWX, Thekla and Gravity
  • Tuesday 20 September: Stoke Bishop to SWX and Thekla
  • Wednesday 21 September: Stoke Bishop to SWX
  • Thursday 22 September: Stoke Bishop to Motion. There will also be a bus service running from Bristol SU (The Richmond Building) to Motion.

There will be bus routes running for the journey back from club night events, stopping off at the City Centre, Clifton Triangle and Stoke Bishop which are also free. Look out for the Welcome Angels at our events to point you in the right direction to get home.

Key information:

  • Get there early: the earlier you get to the Transport Hub, the less time you’ll need to queue- the same applies to club night events! Buses will start running from 21:30
  • Make sure you check your ticket before you get to the Hub, so you know which venue you're going to and which queue you need to join
  • The Transport Hub is a no alcohol zone: if you show up with alcohol, you will be asked by a member of security to it put in in one of the bins, so remember to leave your drinks in your halls. If you show up too drunk, you may not be allowed onto the buses.
  • Follow the signs: there will be signage throughout the Hub guiding you to the correct bus for your club night
  • Don’t go onto the road: we know you’ll be eager to get to your club nights, but your safety is our priority!
  • Try to avoid taxis: they can clog up the Transport Hub and slow down the bus service
  • We’re here to help: staff at the Hub are there for your safety, not to police your behaviour
  • Look out for each other: if you see anyone who needs help, please speak to a member of staff

The Welcome Fair

The Bristol SU Welcome Fair takes part on Durdham Downs at the junction of Parrys Lane and Saville Road and there are several ways you can travel to the site:

Buses

There are currently bus driver shortages in Bristol which may mean the waiting time for buses is longer than advertised and demand for each bus is higher.

Where possible we highly recommend walking or cycling to the event.

First Bus Durdham Park Stop - 1, 2, 2a or 3 buses. From this stop it’s a 6-minute walk to the Welcome Fair entrance along Westbury Road

Black Boy Hill Stop – 1,2a, 3, 72a, 505 buses. From this stop it is a 12-minute walk to the Welcome Fair entrance along Westbury Road

Cycling

There will be a temporary bike rack on Parrys Lane, so make sure you bring along your bike lock!

Please don’t attach your bike to the perimeter fencing or leave your bike out overnight as it may be at risk of being removed.

Bicycles, skateboards, scooters, roller blades or personal motorised vehicles will not be permitted inside the event – this is with the exception of mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs.

Voi Scooters

Voi electric scooters are available to hire across Bristol. Parking for the scooters will be found on Parrys Lane. For more information on Voi visit their website >> www.voiscooters.com/how-to-voi/  or download the app

Walking

If you’re based in or around Clifton, walking is a good option.

If you’re a little further afield you can check out our handy guide to estimated walking times via the Welcome Fair webpage. Just click the ‘How can I get there’ tab.

Car parking

We recommend visitors avoid coming by car where possible.

Parking is not available on site and is limited in the surrounding area due to residents parking schemes and designated coach parking. Cars parked in these areas may be ticketed by Bristol City Council.
