This is your chance to make a difference and learn more about democracy at Bristol SU!
Student Council happens twice a year at Bristol SU. This is the first of the two, and will take place on 10th November from 4:30 PM - 7:00 PM.
Student Council is the main representative forum of the Students' Union. It creates policy which directs the focus for our team of 7 SU officers. Members discuss and vote on items (called motions) submitted by students. Any motions that pass become active SU policy for three years.
All students can submit motions and attend the meeting, but only course reps, faculty reps, network chairs, society presidents, volunteering project co-ordinators, or club captains can vote on motions.
This is an unticketed event but please bring your student IDs as we will need to check them to verify who is able to vote. There will also be free pizza and pronoun badges available! 🍕
ABOUT STUDENT COUNCIL
Student Council happens twice a year, once in TB1, and once in TB2. Ahead of each Student Council students can put forward suggestions (called motions), which are designed to improve students’ lives. All Bristol students can then attend Student Council to watch the debates and see which motions have been voted in (passed). This year's Student Council will be held remotely on Blackboard. If you would like to attend as a non-voting member, please email bristolsu-democracy@bristol.ac.uk with your full name and university email address.
In previous Student Councils, students have passed policy to create Black Students' and Parents, Carers, and Mature Students' Networks, to better support pregnant students, to support the climate strike campaign, and to adopt a harm reduction approach to drugs and alcohol. This is your chance to make long-lasting and far-reaching change at Bristol.
MOTIONS
Motions are now ready for the upcoming Student Council. These are all student ideas submitted and approved by students for debate. There is now an Amendments Window - your chance to try and change the actions if you don't feel they're quite right.
View motions in more detail under Student Council.
Submitting an amendment is simple: you send an email to bristolsu-democracy@bristol.ac.uk specifying what exactly you want to change!
Please make sure to specify the Action Point number you're proposing to amend. We'll invite you to Student Council to speak on your amendment too, making this a debate for all students!
Please get in touch with any questions: email bristolsu-council@bristol.ac.uk.
HOW MOTIONS GET PASSED
All motions submitted before the deadline get debated at Student Council, unless your Democratic Standards Committee deems it's suitable elsewhere!
At Student Council, each person who's submitted that motion will "propose" their idea to the voting members. Then, the Chair will offer someone to speak against! A debate unfolds, so your voting members can get all the information their needs to make it Union policy.
OUR COMMITTEES
We have two committees whose roles are to make sure our democratic processes are transparent and accessible, and to hold our officers to account.
