Student Focused WECA Mayoral Political Debate

PLEASE NOTE: This event is open exclusively to students across Bath and Bristol, student ID is required to enter this event.

Are you angry that the bus seems to never come on time? Struggled to find affordable housing? Or maybe you are frustrated by changes in Bristol?

These aren’t just everyday annoyances! They're big issues that affect students, and there's one person responsible for tackling them: the next Mayor of the West of England Combined Authority (WECA).

On 24 March, we’re giving students the chance to challenge the political candidates going for this role. Join our Student Living Officer, Lucy, at the Wills Memorial Building Great Hall to ask the big questions and find out what they plan to do for students!

What does WECA mean?

So, WECA stands for The West of England Combined Authority. This organisation is in place to support its residents with better access to skills, jobs, affordable housing and better housing. As students at the University of Bristol, you also fall under their responsibility! So, what they do, what they represent and the issues they act on will affect you!

About the event

Ever seen the show Question Time? Envisage something similar, but this time the questions are all focused on students and rather than a host of politicians and personalities – it’s going to be the Mayoral Candidates for WECA!

This event will serve as a public forum where candidates from major political parties and independent contenders will outline their manifestos, policy priorities, and vision for the Bristol region.

It allows you students to directly engage with those standing for election, providing them with an opportunity to challenge candidates on their proposals and assess their suitability for the role.

Most importantly, we can then hold their promises to improve things for Bristol students to account, if they are elected!

Key themes and discussion points for this husting will be on, Transport and Infrastructure, Housing, Job Growth, Economic Development, Environment, Climate Action and Education.

Also, this is going to be all in the stature of the Wills Memorial Buildings Great Hall!

Candidates

We have invited all of the candidates who are running for this position to the hustings, and each will have an opportunity to say how they are going to be improving the city of Bristol for students.
