"My name is Louisa and I am the Project Coordinator for Barrow 2024-25. In my own words, Barrow is a volunteering scheme that is very much appreciated by all. This project has been running for over 50 years and volunteers not only get a sense of pride in helping out but it also helps you gain experience with communication etc. The project may seem daunting but the committee (consisting of myself, Mahek and Ikraan) will really support you through the experience giving safety briefings, debriefs and pointing you towards extra support if needed.
We will be starting the volunteering in January 2025. The Give It A Go in January will introduce you to what exactly we do and how it works so that you are as comfortable as possible as volunteers. Barrow is a student-run social group for patients of Callington Road Psychiatric Hospital. We take a group of volunteers each Sunday evening from 7 - 9 pm.
We visit patients to chat and play games over tea and biscuits. Pictionary and Scrabble are some current favourites! The patients appreciate new faces and a break from their hospital routine. No previous experience is necessary and co-ordinators will be present each week so no need to worry about knowing what is going on! We meet at Will's Memorial Building at 5:50 pm and then take taxis to Callington Road Hospital. Taxis are also provided to drop you everyone at either college green or the SU. All taxis are covered in the student volunteering budget, so no need to worry about the cost!
Barrow is a low commitment volunteering scheme - you don’t have to attend every session, you can come as little or as often as you like. Just reply to the weekly email to sign-up for the sessions you would like to attend. We take a maximum of 8 volunteers along, so make sure to reply quickly each week. Barrow gives you the chance to gain experience in a psychiatric hospital; improving communication skills, sharing an interest in mental health with other volunteers and just having a fun Sunday evening playing games!

Membership Fee Inclusions
Prior to signing up to a Club or Society speak to the Committee to find out what your membership includes and if there are any further expenses throughout the year.
Service Standards
All Club or Society members can expect to receive:
- The opportunity to attend regular meetings, events, activities, trips and socials as arranged.
- The opportunity to stand for a committee position or vote in their elections (Bristol students only).
- For Sports Club – to attend regular training sessions and have the opportunity to be selected for the teams.
Code of Conduct
When joining a club or society you are agreeing to abide by the constitution, general rules, regulations and policies of University of Bristol Students’ Union and also the Club or Society Code of Conduct which sets out the level of behaviour & discipline expected of all Club & Society members.
Refund Policy
Any customer who pays for a membership subscription to a Bristol SU Society, Sports Club, Student Media and initiatives has a 14 day cooling off period from the time and date of purchase during which they have the right to cancel the subscription and receive a full refund. If you do decide to cancel within the 14 days, Bristol SU will refund your payment within a further 30 days of the cancellation. To request a refund please email: bristolsu@bristol.ac.uk
Data sharing (Sports Club members only)
Please be aware that Bristol SU may share data relating to the members of its sports clubs with the Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health (a department of the University). This information may be used for the purposes of communicating direct with these members and/or to cross-reference against SEH's Sports Pass membership records.
As part of Bristol SU's membership of British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) Bristol SU may have to share data on to its sports clubs members so BUCS can, from time to time, communicate with these members.
