Description

Welcome to the Black in STEM Society (BSTEM)!

BACKGROUND:

BSTEM was previously known as the Black Engineers Society expanded to be able to cater to a larger group of Black students at the university.

The Black in STEM Society is a dynamic and inclusive society dedicated to fostering a supportive environment for Black students studying STEM related subjects or are interested in going into STEM fields as well as anyone that supports the society’s values and aims.

AIMS:

Facilitate career-building opportunities: BSTEM aims to provide a platform for students to connect with industry professionals, potential employers, and alumni.

Offer professional development resources: Organise workshops, and training sessions on topics including resume building, interview preparation, and technical skills enhancement.

Foster a culture of continuous learning: BSTEM believes in continuous growth and development by exposing our members to opportunities and encouraging professional enrichment.

Promote equality and inclusion: Address the systemic barriers and biases that hinder the progress of Black students in STEM.

STRATEGY:

At BSTEM, our strategy is centered around empowering students within the Global Majority in STEM fields through impactful outreach, engaging social events, and informative seminars.

1. Local Outreach Activities:

We recognise the importance of the representation of black individuals in STEM fields. To actively encourage students within the Global Majority to consider STEM careers as viable career paths, we will organise local outreach activities. These activities will involve inviting students to the university, providing them the opportunity to witness captivating STEM demonstrations. These demonstrations will not only highlight the exciting aspects of a career in STEM but also offer insights into life as a STEM student.

2. Inspirational Talks by Black Experts in STEM:

Throughout the academic year, we intend to host sessions featuring accomplished Black individuals who have made significant contributions to the field. These professionals will share their personal journeys, challenges, and triumphs, providing valuable insights of a STEM career. By connecting our members with successful role models, we aim to instil a sense of possibility and purpose.

3. Career Seminars:

Navigating the transition from university to the professional world can be overwhelming. To address this, we plan to organize seminars that provide practical guidance on securing internships and gaining hands-on experience. We will collaborate with industry experts, career counselors, and alumni to deliver informative workshops on resume building, interview preparation, and networking strategies.

4. Presence at Open Day Events:

To further our mission of encouraging GEM students to pursue STEM subjects, we will actively participate in open day events. These occasions offer a prime opportunity to engage with prospective students. By sharing our experiences, showcasing our society's initiatives, and addressing any concerns, we aim to create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that motivates students to choose STEM.

5. Engaging Social Events

Building a strong community is essential. We will host a variety of engaging social events, from mixers to themed gatherings. These events provide an opportunity for our members to connect on a personal level, fostering friendships and a supportive network within the society.
