Welcome to the University of Bristol Amateur Boxing Club
.
As part of this society, you will be taught the sport of boxing in a safe and controlled environment. Our aim is to give everyone, regardless of ability, a proper understanding and an appreciation for the sport. For those who are new to boxing, multiple sessions will be open to beginners where you can learn the most essential techniques without needing any prior exposure to combat sports. While for those who are registered boxers, we also offer sparring sessions overseen by the prestigious Downend Boxing Club.

Downend ABC
As part of our partnership with Downend ABC, we are given access to their facilities and ring as well as their high-level coaching, giving our members the best chance to further develop their skills. Once members have advanced to a sufficient level and have been carded by England's ABA, they will be able to take part in sparring sessions. If members then manage to impress our head-coach, they will be selected to compete in sanctioned bouts. Our goal is to continue building a team of boxers who will be given numerous opportunities to compete at Club Boxing shows, tournaments/box cups, our very own on-campus Boxing Show, other Universities' shows and BUCS Boxing!

Give It A Go Sessions:
In week 1 of first term, we will be running our free GIAG sessions. These sessions are perfect for people who are on the fence about joining the boxing society as they give you a free taster of our training experience while also giving you the chance to socialise with other prospective members. You also don't have to worry about lack of experience, as these sessions are catered towards beginners. Multiple committee members will be running these sessions so if you have any questions about the society, or want to get to know who is in charge of our club, then you definitely should join in.
There will be multiple sessions, but each one has limited space, you can book yourself in through the events tab at the top of this page.
More information regarding dates, times and locations will be released closer to the time, and we hope to see you there!
Trials:
On a selected night at the start of the year, we will host our annual boxing trials (follow our Instagram for dates). This night will push you to your physical limits so that you can prove to yourself that you have the mental endurance needed to compete in this sport. Taking part in these trials is not required to join the club but we do strongly recommend all beginners to join. The trials will give you a good understanding of your own fitness as well as the endurance that boxing requires. You will also have the opportunity to get to know other members as well as the committee.
The trials should be 1.5 hours but may over run. More information will be released on our Instagram closer to the time.

Competitions
Bouts are sanctioned by England's ABA (https://www.englandboxing.org/). In order to take part in these bouts, new members must first get carded by England Boxing and take part in sparring. To do this you must prove yourself to be committed to training and also have a good understanding of essential techniques. After this you will then need to impress the coaches who, after multiple sparring sessions, may attempt to organise a bout with another club. Once the coach has found a suitable opponent, you will then be able to prove your abilities in the most competitive way...
It is important to know that none of this process will be forced upon you. If you don't want to spar/compete you can train at the regular sessions regardless.

Socials:
Our weekly Wednesday socials offer every member a chance to socialise in a fun and stress-free environment. Last year, we had a range of socials including pub golf, a treasure hunt, pub quizzes, a formal end of year and Christmas dinner, open water swimming, brunch after sessions, end-of-year BBQ… These socials are welcome to everyone, and there will be no pressure to drink at any social. We also organise numerous sober socials so that our alcohol-free members can be fully included.
Information regarding socials will be posted on our Whatsapp.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I train without equipment?
- Of course. Equipment won't be needed for the majority of classes, and the society also has spare boxing gloves that can be lent out for certain sessions. Although we do recommend that committed members purchase a pair of wraps and a gumshield, these are relatively cheap and will last you at least a year.
If I'm a beginner, do I need to go to the Give It A Go Sessions?
- While these sessions are very useful for new members, giving you a taster of what training is like and a chance to socialise with other new members, they are not a necessity and you can join in with our regular sessions without attending GIAG. Although it must be noted while GIAG is free, our regular sessions are not and require membership.
Do I have to do anything to get a membership?
- Other than paying for it, no. Membership is open to all and we highly encourage anyone and everyone to join our society.
My fitness isn't the best, is it worth joining?
- Boxing is obviously a very physically demanding sport, and this can be daunting for people who are not in the best of shape. But, this should never put you off from joining our sessions. They will be tough, and we will encourage you to push yourself to your limit, but you are in charge of what that limit is. If we ask for 10 press-ups and you can only do 1 then you will not be singled out and forced to do the other 9. Fitness comes slowly, but as long as you are committed and train hard, you'll get fit in no time.
If I have something else before, can I show up to a training session late?
- The start of term is always a busy time, and you will likely sign up to do multiple things during the first few weeks, meaning you may not be able to show up to all of our sessions on time. However, our classes are going to be fast-paced, and showing up relatively late will leave you lost, slowing down the session as a whole. Because of this, if you are going to be more than 15 minutes late to a session, we'd hope that you would sit that one out, and join the next session instead.
