Description

What is Model United Nations?

Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of the real United Nations, with students taking on the role of delegates to represent a country and debate topics ranging from political and environmental issues to economic and social ones, representing that country's point of view. MUN promotes greater understanding of international relations, politics and global issues, as well as helping improve debating skills. It is an activity where you can put all your foreign affairs knowledge into practice through negotiation, persuasion and debate. Hundreds of thousands of students attend MUN conferences each year around the world.

Give it a Go!

BrisMUN hosts a number of Give it a Go! sessions in September and October, and more in Refreshers in January. They are designed to give new members an introduction to our society and MUN, and are completely free to attend. In these sessions, the committee will introduce themselves and how MUN works in general, followed by a short debate. There is no pressure to participate - everyone is welcome to come and observe and have fun! Likewise, if you want to join the society at any other time of the year, feel free to come along, your first few sessions are free.

The Society

As a society, we run weekly sessions ususally centring on a debate, but also hold regular all-day Saturday special debates, and training sessions. We also organise and send official delegations to external MUN conferences at other universities in the UK: last year we attended OxIMUN at the University of Oxford, BathMUN, SOTONMUN (Southampton) and London International MUN (LIMUN), the biggest conference in Europe. Although these conferences can be highly academic, there is also a very strong social aspect as you get to mingle with like-minded students from other universities, listen to hilarious delegates cracking jokes in their speeches, and attend fancy black tie dinners! There is a conference for everyone no matter your experience level.

Why join?

Not only is MUN an activity that allows you to develop then put foreign affairs and political knowledge to good use, but it also offers lots of transferable skills no matter what sort of degree you are studying. We have members from across STEM (including a lot of engineers), as well as history, politics, languages and geography, to name but a few. We are also a dynamic society, and send delegations to an increasing number of external conferences each year: 2 in 2022-23, and 4 in 2023-24. In February 2025 we will be hosting our own conference in Bristol! MUN conferences are a great opportunity to visit new cities and meet people from all over the world, plus there are great socials!
