Redefining Knowledge is a campaign that seeks to promote a more inclusive, diverse, and culturally responsive curriculum at the University of Bristol that acknowledges the contributions and experiences of historically marginalised groups.
Colonialism impacted how we learn and what we learn, shaping the knowledge systems we have today. Hence, our academic knowledge systems are arguably not neutral and are products of colonial thinking that excluded indigenous and other historically marginalised groups' experiences, methodologies, and perspectives. The 2015 Rhodes Must Fall Campaign where Decolonising the Curriculum was born, argued just this and explained the movement as not about erasing existing knowledge but embracing non-western, non-eurocentric knowledge systems that were once excluded from the curriculum. The fundamental purpose of education is to inform us about the world, and different lived experiences in order to use what we learn to influence those around us and the world in its entirety. Therefore, if our current source of enlightenment is exclusionary, flawed, and singular, it is essential that we seek to fix this to ensure inclusion and equality. Further, educating students with a decolonised curriculum can prepare them to be truly global citizens who are able to engage in critical and inclusive thinking with cultural competency, in order to understand the complex world we live in today.
