Conducting Workshop with Enyi Okpara

Enyi will be working with our Chamber Orchestra and some BUMS Ensemble Conductors to provide a conducting workshop! All BUMS members are welcome to come along and watch.

Enyi Okpara is Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s Calleva Assistant Conductor, having won the BSO’s coveted conducting competition in 2024. He was also the Conductor in Residence for the London Schools Symphony Orchestra for their 2023/24 season, and the Artistic Director and Founder of Elysium Music, a charity that draws on his passion for music outreach, accessibility, and inclusion through collaborative projects between young professional musicians and children.

In 2024/25, Enyi conducts performances with leading soloists including Danny Driver, Alim Beisembayev, Julian Bliss, Joe Stilgoe, Milly Forrest and Ellis Thomas, as part of a busy season with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Enyi was also Bursary Conductor at Havant Symphony Orchestra - a post previously held by acclaimed conductors Mark Wigglesworth, Jessica Cottis and Ludovic Morlot.

He conducted the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in 2024, as part of the Emerging Conductor’s Showcase, presented in partnership with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He was also a finalist in the Weston Conductor’s Competition and is a former recipient of Sing for Pleasure’s Young Conducting Scholarship.

Growing up in Camden, North London, Enyi’s musical journey began as a percussionist and saxophonist. He studied conducting with Sian Edwards at the Royal Academy of Music, where he held the Derek Butler Award and was awarded a DipRAM for outstanding final recital. He also won HRH Princess Alice, The Duchess of Gloucester’s Prize for exemplary studentship and performance.
