Description

Welcome to CalSoc

Caledonian Society prides itself in being a place to meet lots of new people, pick up some excellent life skills, and importantly let off some steam outside of your busy university schedules. We are dedicated to teaching the art of traditional Scottish reeling, welcoming anyone - especially beginners! Come join us for a bit of dancing, a couple of drinks, and lots of fun every Sunday.

N.B. No need to be Scottish!

What is reeling?

Reeling is simply Scottish dancing. There are lots of reels (or dances) out there, but we will of course be focusing on the best ones! In the majority of reels, you will dance with a partner as part of a set (or group) of 8 – it really is the best way to meet a tonne of new people. Don’t worry if don't know what to expect as there are plenty of friendly and experienced reelers on hand to help at our weekly practices.

For those who want to get ahead and get a sense of what we do at Calsoc, here’s a great YouTube Channel does video tutorials of all the reels: https://www.youtube.com/c/LondonReels.

What to look forward to:

1. The two highlights of the year will be our Christmas and Spring balls. Get your black tie on (tartan actively encouraged), grab a group of friends, and dance the night away!

2. A variety of different social events outside of reeling practices, including whisky tasting, a Burns Night haggis feast, and many more. Our fabulous social secs organise fun socials every other week!

3. Learning a life skill which you can teach your friends (or simply just to show off to them) – it really will come in handy, we promise!

Where to try it out:

Follow us on Instagram or join the Whatsapp chat to ask any queries about this whole CalSoc thing and to keep up to date!

Practices will be held every Sunday in Room AR6 in the Richmond Building from 6:30-8pm where we show you the ropes! Keep an eye on our social media pages for any changes in timings/location. For those who want to, we head to the Den & Terrace together after for a pint.

Membership:

Becoming a member of our incredible society for just £15 gives you access to:
- Discounted ball tickets (you actually recoup your membership cost by the end of the year!)
- Regular socials and events
- Be part of a clan (a take on other societies' family schemes)
- Weekly practices
- First priority to attend other universities’ balls

We highly encourage you to become a member - we promise it is worth it!!!

We want our society, and the benefits of being a member, to be available to everyone regardless of their background. This is why we have reduced our membership price from last year, and have made it as low as possible while ensuring the society remains financially stable. Despite this being a very cheap membership price compared to other societies, we appreciate some people may not be in a position where they can afford this. As part of our commitment to inclusivity, if this does genuinely apply to you, please email our treasurer Hugo (mb23531@bristol.ac.uk) or our equality officer Ellie (dt22092@bristol.ac.uk) and they will be happy to provide support. You won't be treated differently to anyone else, and only whomever you email will be aware of who you are!
