For the 4th talk in our engineering design series we were joined by Thomas Rosier and David Bould from Orsted. Thomas is an engineering design alumni who did his placement with RWE working on offshore wind, he is now a Senior Project Lead for offshore foundation installation at Orsted. David Bould studied at the university of Edinburgh and is now Lead R&D Specialist at Orsted.
The Orsted vision is, “To create a world that runs entirely on green energy.” They are the world leaders in offshore wind with nearly 10 GW of capacity either installed or under construction. As well as offshore wind, they are also involved with onshore wind, solar PV, and bioenergy; their newest venture is in Hydrogen and green fuels.
Since 2007 Orsted have reduced their CO2 output by nearly 90% since 2007 whilst simultaneously doubling their profitability. This illustrates that the time when renewable energy (especially offshore wind) was not economically viable is now over and that other energy companies can also make the switch if they are willing. Since 2012 the cost of offshore wind energy has reduced by 66%.
Thomas spoke to us about his role in the offshore foundation installation sector of Orsted’s business. He talked about the installation of monopile foundations using large hammer like drivers, as well as the logistics of monopile transportation.
