Hockey - Men's

  • Hcokey mens

Description

The Men's Hockey Club prides itself on being a welcoming, inclusive, and open club for players of all abilities. We run five teams that play on Wednesdays and on the weekend, across different levels. The social side is equally important to us, hosting weekly Wednesday night socials, where you are sure to meet a wide range of people from other halls and courses.

Performance:

Our 1st XI currently competes in the BUCS Premier (National) League and in England Hockey National Conference West, the 1st XI. The 2nd XI have retained their place in BUCS South Premier league and finished 2nd by a point this season and narrowly missed out on promotion to West Prem, they will hunt for revenge in West Div 1 North into the next season. The performance squad, consisting of our 1st & 2nd XIs, compete and trains twice per week, as well as having two additional strength & conditioning sessions. Selection for the performance squad requires a considerable time commitment and high levels of personal fitness, therefore, we recommend that any new students aspiring to be selected should attend preseason training - more information on our social media accounts.

Participation:

Our lower teams participate in BUCS on a Wednesday and the West hockey league on saturdays, but at a slightly less competitive level. In these teams, there is more of a focus on enjoying hockey with friends rather than pure performance. That said, we still aim for promotion every year!

These squads are perfect for anyone who may have less experience playing hockey or who have not played for a while to build up their skills, fitness, and confidence through match play. Again, these squads compete and train twice per week, but less commitment expected and more flexibility for players in these teams.

Social:

The hockey club has a vibrant social atmosphere and is a fantastic way to meet a group of like-minded people. With a weekly social every wedneday night which ranges from sober socials to bar crawls, the social side of the club is accommodating for all. After a few weeks of mixing within the club we then look to expand to other sporting societies such as ladies hockey, lacrosse and netball, after which we all flock to Gravity along with all of the university sports clubs. Furthermore, we hold two annual black-tie dinners for the whole club and numerous other events such as alumni evenings, charity events, and a mixed tour over Christmas and Easter.

Pre-Season:

Pre-season for the 2024-2025 season is due to start on 12th August, running to the start of term. If you are interested in joining the club, especially the performance squad, we recommend coming along for some pre-season, where a senior member will be able to look after you for the duration of your stay! It will include plenty of hockey, both training and friendlies, along with a more relaxed social scene that encourages team bonding and getting settled into the new city. Please note you don't have to commit to the whole duration!

All current and prospective members are welcome, including students starting in September 2024. For more details, please don't hesitate to contact:
