Welcome to Bristol SU's multi award-winning LGBTQ+ Society!

We supportrepresent and unite the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and plus students of Bristol University. We are a judgement free society and welcome people of absolutely all genders and sexual minorities.

WHAT WE DO

- Provide a variety of safe and accessible events for LGBTQ+ students such as:

  • Non-drinking events including meetups with board games or crafts, movie screenings, book club, brunches and picinics
  • Pub and club nights including karaoke and pub quizes
  • Big LGBTQ+ ball with food and entertainment
  • Meetup for various identity group within the society
  • Collabarations with other societies

- Promote awareness of LGBTQ+ issues to the student body and campaign for positive change

- Offer a confidential peer support group for LGBTQ+ students every 2 weeks

- Connect new members with returners threough our family scheme

- Manage, support or work with with groups representing communities under the LGBTQ+ umbrella:

  • Trans Network - Affiliated group for trans and non-binary students
  • Bristol Aspecs - Group for students on the aromantic/asexual spectrum supported by the society
  • We also have informal group chats for BAME and postgraduate LGBTQ+ students (contact us for more info)

AWARDS

In 2015 we were named as the runner up of NUS Best LGBT Society of the Year, and won NUS Best Campaign! We also won NUS Best LGBT society alongside the 'Best Student Group' and 'Campaign of the Year' at Bristol SU Awards Night in previous years.

We are two-time winners of the Bristol SU Society Award for "Most Inclusive Society", in 2018 and 2020!

In 2023 we won the 'Bristol SU Volunteering and Fundraising Award' for our LGBTQ+ education seminars we've been running at City of Bristol College!

PRIVACY & CONFIDENTIALITY

However you identify, or if you prefer no label at all, you are more than welcome to join us, and you don't have to be ‘out’ to join! The LGBTQ+ Society values your privacy and at your request we do our best to protect it - just let fellow members and/or a committee member know that you don't want to be tagged on social media etc.

Anyone contacting our committee seeking advice or welfare support will be treated with the utmost respect and confidentiality.  Unless we feel you are in danger, we will not share any personal details of your situation with a relevant peer, such as our Welfare Rep, without first receiving your permission.  Support group discussion is also completely private, and we have a very strong record of confidentiality. We want all our members to feel they have somewhere to turn to for support.

You also don't have to identify as LGBTQ+ to join us - supporters are very welcome at our events. We look forward to meeting you!

MEMBERSHIP

Standard membership- Free. This membership is for everyone, and is totally free. With this membership you can come to all of our events, and get discounted tickets for some events as part of the society.

Advanced membership- £5. This membership is £5 for the entire year, and provides discounts for most of our events that have a cost. This is a cost-effective choice if you plan to go to more than 2-3 of our events this year. Other than discounted tickets, there is no difference to our standard membership.

Membership Fee Inclusions

Purchase of Advanced Membership for the 2024-25 year includes:

- Discount for certain society events/trips throughout the year (subject to event cost)

Prior to signing up to a Club or Society speak to the Committee to find out what your membership includes and if there are any further expenses throughout the year.

 

Service Standards

 

All Club or Society members can expect to receive:

 

  • The opportunity to attend regular meetings, events, activities, trips and socials as arranged.
  • The opportunity to stand for a committee position or vote in their elections (Bristol students only).

 

Code of Conduct

 

When joining a club or society you are agreeing to abide by the constitution, general rules, regulations and policies of University of Bristol Students’ Union and also the Club or Society Code of Conduct which sets out the level of behaviour & discipline expected of all Club & Society members.

Refund Policy

 

Any customer who pays for a membership subscription to a Bristol SU Society, Sports Club, Student Media and initiatives has a 14 day cooling off period from the time and date of purchase during which they have the right to cancel the subscription and receive a full refund. If you do decide to cancel within the 14 days, Bristol SU will refund your payment within a further 30 days of the cancellation.  To request a refund please email: bristolsu@bristol.ac.uk

 

Data sharing (Sports Club members only)

 

Please be aware that Bristol SU may share data relating to the members of its sports clubs with the Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health (a department of the University).  This information may be used for the purposes of communicating direct with these members and/or to cross-reference against SEH's Sports Pass membership records.

 

As part of Bristol SU's membership of British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) Bristol SU may have to share data on to its sports clubs members so BUCS can, from time to time, communicate with these members.

If you're joining one of the societies listed below please be aware that your name and email address will be shared with Bristol Hub for the purpose of keeping you up to date with their activities through their email “The Week”:
