Music Theatre Bristol is one of the university’s biggest performing arts societies. Every year we put on three shows in the 200-seater Winston Theatre. The first, Showcase, features extracts from six different musicals, and is the biggest show of the year with a cast of around 80 performers.
In Term 2, we produce two full-length musicals, one in our Winston Theatre and one in an external venue, with our most recent productions including GREASE, CARRIE, GYPSY: A Musical Fable, COMPANY and LEGALLY BLONDE. This year, we are doing 9-5 in the Winston Theatre, and ALICE BY HEART in the Loco Klub!
Additionally, we produce two 48-Hour Musicals, one in our Winston Theatre and one in our Pegg Studio Theatre. It is a fun, jam-packed weekend where the production team produce a full-length musical for the cast to learn and perform all in the space of one weekend! Our most recent 48-Hour Musicals include SCHOOL OF ROCK, LES MISERABLES, MAMMA MIA!, ANNIE and HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL.
There are four cabarets throughout the year, one being a Newbies Cabaret which provides opportunities for those new to MTB to try their hand at directing, choreographing, vocal coaching, producing, and performing alongside other freshers! Additionally, we host a Christmas Winter Cabaret as well as two other themed cabarets, with our most recent themes being Crime Cabaret, Cabaret: Through the Ages and Miscast Cabaret, which take place in the Spring and Summer. We are also hoping to send a team up to Edinburgh Fringe this year!
MTB is arguably the most social of the performing arts societies, so it’s great for meeting new people. We have regular socials which range from themed nights out and pub crawls to scavenger hunts and open-mic nights.
Our shows allow opportunities not only for performers, but also offers roles on production teams, and to play in the band!
We also have a family scheme which provides new members with a smaller group of familiar faces, helping you settle and get to know others in the society better. Additionally, we have annual tours abroad, with previous trips taking our members to Prague, Budapest, and Amsterdam. We also join up with the other performing arts societies such as A Capella, DramSoc, Spotlights, Stage Technicians' Association (STA) and BOpS for socials, workshops, collaborative performances, and the annual ‘Performing Arts Gets Poshed’ Summer Ball.
The shows we put on are proposed and voted for by our members, and we pride ourselves on having a great reputation within the performing arts scene. We have both auditioned and un-auditioned productions and initiatives, allowing anyone who loves musical theatre to build upon their performance skills, try their hand at producing, learn new songs and dances, and meet lots of people. MTB also hosts Musical Theatre workshops by MTB alumni and industry professionals, with recent favourites including a ‘SHOWSTOPPERS! Improvised Musical’ workshop and a writing workshop with GBBO The Musical's very own Jake Brunger. So whether you’re a singer, dancer, actor, musician, director, producer, choreographer, or completely new to musical theatre, these opportunities to get involved in the society all year round means there is always something for you!
Membership is £9.00 for the academic year, and entitles you to be apart of any MTB production (i.e Cast and Production Team). Membership also allows you to vote at show proposals and AGMs as well as getting you money off tickets to any MTB show!
