Bristol SU recognises that the costs of participating in student groups can be prohibitively expensive for some students. The Activity Hardship Fund was created to support those students who wouldn't otherwise be able to participate in their chosen activity due to the cost.
Shakespeare Society is Bristol's ONLY society dedicated to performing, updating, and making Shakespeare exciting!
Gone are the days of reading dull Shakespeare plays for English A-level and GCSE, at ShaxSoc we are all about showcasing Shakespeare how it was always intended, through performances. Since the formation of this group in 2022 we have already performed Romeo & Juliet, Twelfth Night, Julius Caeser, Taming of the Shrew and A Midsummer Night's Dream. As well as our annual Shaxsoc showcase where we perform 15-minute extracts of our favourite Shakespeare plays.
This society isn't just a place to perform, it's a place to meet with like-minded people and join a group that always has the member's best interests at heart. Our social secretaries ensure we meet as a society regularly in a range of places, from a classic club night to a cosy cafe, everyone is welcome. There is never any pressure to perform, so if you feel like just coming along for a chat there will always be friendly faces to greet you.
The production side of any performance is invaluable, which is why ShaxSoc provides a range of opportunities for people to divulge in their prod team dreams. Any ShaxSoc member can dabble in directing, producing, marketing, costume designing etc... to help create the most breathtaking performances. With 6 shows in our annual showcase and 2 other main shows throughout the year, this society is never running out of opportunities to get involved.
TO ALL OUR FRESH FACES... Everyone on the committee has been a fresher at one point or another and we all understand how stressful it can be to join a new group, which is why in every show we do we have fresher prioritised roles, this means you guys will have a leg up to break through into the world of performance and have your time to shine. We cannot wait to meet you and hope you feel the same way.
If you're reading this never having performed Shakespeare a day in your life and don't even know how anyone can stumble into an audition room and blurt out "To be or not to be, that is the question." You are not alone. As much as we love Shakespeare in this society, we can all agree his language is a bit of a mouthful sometimes. To combat the Shakespeare scaries, we host regular workshops with experienced members or Alumni who have excelled in the theatrical world to come and host skills-based workshops. This way you can constantly build upon your talent and hopefully start to appreciate his words rather than fear them. Below are a couple examples of previous workshops!
All in all ShaxSoc is committed to providing the best possible experience for everyone involved and we cannot wait to see you all!
