SILAT
Silat, or Pencak Silat, is a generic term that defines a combative art of self-defence and survival rooted in the Malay Archipelago, known as "NUSANTARA". Traced back to the early days of the Langkasuka Kingdom, Srivijaya Empire, Majapahit Empire and Malacca Sultanate, Silat has evolved into a fine practice of physical, mental and spiritual training also encompassing traditional Malay attire, Silat musical instruments and customs. A part from that, the new form of Silat competitions have been created for the promotions of this art throughout the country, and internationally.
Our club in University of Bristol is based on Silat Seni Gayong style. Silat Seni Gayong is a traditional Malaysian martial art that has been founded by Dato' Meor Abdul Rahman, (1915 - 1991) who had been one of the prominent public figure in Malaysia in the struggles to unite Malay people under the British era, Japanese invasion and Communist insurgency. "Pertubuhan Silat Seni Gayong" was registered for the first time officially in Johor Bharu, Malaysia, on the 22nd of October 1963 with the registration number 361, and now has been succeeded by Pertubuhan Silat Seni Gayong Malaysia, and few other Silat Seni Gayong federations or branches.
Among the lessons or techniques in Silat Seni Gayong are Sendi Harimau (Art of Tiger), Rajawali (Phoenix), Helang (Eagle), Seni Pukulan (Vital points strikes), Seni Kunci Mati (Locking), Seni Kunci Hidup (Grappling), Serangan Maut (3-seconds Combat) and Seni Yoi. The weapons are taught also in this style which among them include as Pisau (Knife), Simbat (Staff), Keris (Malay Dagger), Golok (Short machete), Parang (Machete), Pedang (Sword), Perisai (Shield), Sundang Lipas (Double-blade sword), Tombak (Spear), Lembing (Javelin), Rantai (Chain), Cindai (Cloth), Tekpi (short-handled trident), Kerambit (curved knife), Sabit (Sickle), Kapak (Axe) and Seni Memanah (Traditional Archery).

A part from learning the syllabus and get progress in the belt ranks, our club also has the Silat competition trainings with the aim to prepare our athletes to the UK or international Silat championships, only for the students who are interested (optional).
SILAT COMPETITION
There are 4 Pencak Silat competition categories :
1) TANDING
Tanding refers to a match, 1 vs 1, where two teams send out a representative each to engage in a bout with each other. Opponents have to abide by strict rules regarding stance, movement patterns, and permitted attacking areas.
2) TUNGGAL
Tunggal, on the other hand, is a singles event. Only one contestant is allowed in the arena at a time. He or she will showcase a solo routine - without weapons first, before moving on to an armed segment which are the Golok and Toya (long staff)
3) GANDA
Groups of two will participate in the Ganda, or doubles, category. They will showcase a three-minute routine, taking turns to performed unarmed and with weapons.
