Description

Hello!
We are Student Action for Refugees (STAR); one of over 40 groups around the UK and part of a national charity of thousands of students who are welcoming asylum seekers and refugees to the UK.

Together we:

  • Run an ESOL Conversation Club in Bristol Central Library, where volunteers can help people from migrant or refugee backgrounds learn English
  • Work/volunteer with local refugee charities, including Jacari, who we collaborate with for our Homework Club
  • Campaign to improve the lives of refugees and those seeking asylum and challenge institutional injustice, including our 2024/25 campaign against Bristol University's investment in the border industry
  • Learn and educate others about the experience of being a refugee and about the asylum process in the UK through online advocacy, events, talks and fundraisers
  • Fundraise for the Sanctuary Scholar Legal Fund Group
  • Cooperate with other STAR groups across the UK, to highlight the national support amongst students for supporting refugees

Across our various projects, STAR provides its members with more volunteering opportunities than most other student societies in the University of Bristol, alongside regular socials and events where members can meet other students who share our values. Also, volunteering with us could count towards your Bristol PLUS Award, which rewards volunteering and other extracurriculur activities students take on during their studies. If you would like to help make Bristol a place of sanctuary, and make our university more welcoming to refugees, become a member today for free!

If you would like to learn more or have any queries, feel free to reach out to our team via email (bristolstar@outlook.com) or Instagram (@starbristol).

If you have refugee or asylum seeker status and would like support in accessing the University of Bristol, please get in touch via email. We can provide you with more information on the Sanctuary Scholarship Scheme, advice on how to apply to university and pair you with a current student studying the course you would like to study for help with your personal statement.
