Currently the website has slightly unwieldy URLs for student groups. Addresses like http://www.bristolsu.org.uk/groups/athletics-cross-country-fd97 aren't exactly memorable. What you really need is something neat, easy to remember and short enough to fit on your printed materials. So here's how to create a custom URL:
Before you get started you will need to decide on what you want your URL to be. It will have to start bristolsu.org.uk/, but after that you can craft your own text. Try and make it as short as you can whilst still being easily understandable. A ground rule though; Don't use something that could conceivably be used by another group or the Union. So, don't use /football as there are more than one football related groups.
Don't use something non-specific to your group that could also be justifiably claimed by others e.g. /fun or /extreme. Try searching for the word(s) that you want to use in the bristolsu.org.uk search bar and see what else comes up. Ideally your group should be the only directly relevant thing that is listed. If in doubt please sense check it with us by emailing us at bristolsu@bristol.ac.uk. Obviously, the Union reserves the right to change URLs if it causes confusion for visitors to the website. If you're likely to print the URL anywhere then please run it past us first to avoid any costly mistakes.
Once you know your desired URL, log-in at bristolsu.org.uk and go to your dashboard (hover over the bit that says 'Hello, [Your Name]' at the top of the screen and then click on 'Your Dashboard'). Then click on the 'Edit' cog in the 'Configure Group' section (see screen grab below).
Then click on 'Content management' and then 'Add Section' (see below).
Then complete the form EXACTLY as shown below:
Then hit save.
You should then be taken back to the 'Content Management' tab. You should now see 'URL Shortcut (List)' in a yellow bar. Click on the cog on the right hand side of that yellow bar, and the 'add link' option (see below).
Then complete the form as follows, except for replacing [Your Group Name] with your actual group name in the 'Title' field AND pasting the current URL for your page into the 'External Link' section (not the American Football one).
Then fill the rest of the form in like below, but with your new URL in the 'Custom Path' section. Leave off the www.bristolsu.org.uk as the system automatically does that. Make sure you start with a forward slash e.g. '/'
Hit save and then test your new URL by typing bristolsu.org.uk/[your new URL] into your browser. Hopefully that's worked and you're now the prouder owner of a sleeker website address!
