Ocean Diver Training 2024/25 (Round 1)

For people who are new to diving and do not have a diving qualification. This qualification gives you your entity-level SCUBA diving qualification recognised globally, enabling you to dive to 20m. More details on the course can be found here.

Eligibility:

  • Be medically fit by either self-certifying by answering ‘no’ to all questions on this form or by getting a diver medical exam. Please contact Lewis Hope (Diving Officer) if you are unsure if you are medically fit to dive.

  • Be able to swim 200m continuously.

  • You must have a high level of English language proficiency.

Costs:

  • £150 - This ticket includes: club membership, pool costs, kit hire in the pool, kit hire for all open water sessions, and instructor costs.

  • £55 - BSAC Yearly Membership and Ocean Diver course pack. Purchase this here and select Option 7. You must buy this as soon as possible after buying this ticket.

  • Variable - Trip costs including petrol and dive site fees which are calculated after each trip. There are some pieces of kit that you need to buy yourself.

Course Commitments:

  • Six Theory Lectures

  • One Theory Exam 

  • One Theory Resit (for those who fail more than one section in the initial exam)

  • Five Pool Lessons these are to be completed over three evening sessions

  • Four Open Water Sessions ideally two can be completed per day

All theory lectures and exams are to be held on Thursday evenings from 18:30-19:30. There will not be a theory session during Reading Week. The pool sessions will be on a Saturday from 17:00-21:00 in TB1. We will confirm an exact schedule shortly. Open water sessions can be completed on club trips or specific training trips. These are usually on weekends, through easter, or over the summer. You must be able to commit to these sessions to complete training and be willing to join club trips.

To complete the course it is important that you are willing to join the sessions you are signing up for. We will provide every opportunity for you to complete training throughout the year. All lessons are assessed against skills performance standards which sometimes means students require more lessons than specified to complete the course. If you do not complete the training within the academic year, then you can continue in the next, however, you will be required to purchase an annual membership for UBUC and BSAC.
