We are a cultural society based at the University of Bristol, founded in 1995. Since then, we have been actively involved in communities in Bristol, Bath, and the West, traveling around as a troupe performing and sharing lion dance with the rest of the world! We aim to share the beauty of Chinese culture and spread happiness, luck, and prosperity everywhere we go!
We welcome anybody to join! Come travel with us around the United Kingdom as a passionate group of performers, we would love to have you there!
Here's us performing for the Bristol Museum as we do every Chinese New Year!
What is lion dance?
Lion dance* is a prevalent form of celebration in many East Asian cultures, such as Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and China. It is usually performed for special occasions such as Chinese New Year, wedding ceremonies and shop openings. It is performed to spread happiness, luck, and prosperity!
It involves an Orchestra of one drummer, some cymbalists, and a gongist (and occasionally a percussionist put on the cowbells) and 1-4 Lions, composed of a Head and Tail performer. There's something for everyone - musician, dancer, or both! As a troupe we usually have a personal favorite, and the rotation of roles is part of the fun!
A standard lion dance orchestra.
*It is different from Dragon Dancing, which it is often mistaken for. Dragon Dancing involves multiple people puppetting a giant dragon.
Who is welcome to join?
Absolutely anybody! We really mean this. With the variety of roles, there’s something for everyone. Most new members come without any experience at all, performing mostly in February (Chinese New Year). Musicians and dancers are more than welcome to try something they might not have tried before!
