Description

University of Bristol Motorsport Society

Whether you're a hardcore motorsport fan, fancy yourself as the next Max Verstappen or are just simply fed up of the 20mph speed limit and want to go thrash a go-kart round with your mates, University of Bristol Motorsport is the perfect society for you!

As a society, we offer 4 main types of events:

  • F1 Socials -  Social events in which we gather to watch races together (usually at The White Harte).
  • Indoor Karting - Indoor karting events around Bristol, including some special events throughout the year.
  • The British Universities Karting Championship (BUKC) - We represent UoB in the BUKC National Championship and the BUKC 24Hr Race at Teesside.
  • Sim Racing Events (new!) - We are planning to host simracing events, including give-it-a-go sessions with a rig free to try in person, and sessions virtually.

Membership

We currently offer 2 types of membership:

Social Membership - Free

This membership enables members to attend the F1 socials and benefit from potential discounts at pubs.

We currently host socials at The White Harte, where there is a special discount for UBMS members. The more people join the more discounts we can bring to members!

Full Membership - £15

Membership costs £15 for the academic year and offers the following perks:

  • Up to £5 discount on indoor karting event tickets
  • Access to any exclusive social events organised by the society

We aim to host indoor kart races every month, and the cost per event tends to be around £25 with the membership discount.

FAQs

Q : Where can I find out about upcoming social events?

A: We post upcoming social events on our Facebook and Instagram, as well as on the WhatsApp group. Keep an eye on these platforms!

Q : Do I need any previous karting experience to take part in indoor karting events?

A: Our indoor events are completely open to all skill and experience levels, so feel free to come along and give it a go!

Q : What about BUKC. Do I need any experience for that?

A : If you wish to take part in any BUKC events, we prefer that you have at least some previous experience karting, but feel free to contact our President & BUKC Captain, Alex Watson (bv21918@bristol.ac.uk), with any questions about the BUKC.

Q : Do I need to bring any equipment to karting events?

A : The only equipment required for our karting events (excluding BUKC) are a racing balaclava and pair of racing gloves. These are available for purchase at the tracks (usually costing no more than £5 together), and are then yours to keep for future races. If you happen to have either of these at home, feel free to bring them, though please check whether the equipment is suitable with the staff before going on track.

Q : What should I wear on track?

A : You will be provided with overalls at the track, so just wear whatever you feel will be comfortable underneath them. If you have your own overalls, you are free to bring them to the track and may be worn at the discretion of the marshals.

Q : Does the society handle anything to do with Formula Student?

A : Unfortunately the university does not have a Formula Student group. However, Bristol Racing builds a car to compete in Greenpower F24+, you can contact them at bristol_racing@outlook.com or visit their SU page for more info. While UBMS is separate from Bristol Racing, we intend to collaborate with them so make sure you check them out!

Feel free to get in touch with any of us if you have any questions, be it through the group or personally, and we look forward to seeing you at one of our many events!
