Stoke Bishop nature walk and foray

Overview

Immerse yourself in the beautiful surroundings of Stoke Bishop, home of many first-year students and discover the fascinating world of plants and fungi on this guided nature walk. Learn about different species of mushrooms, their roles in the ecosystem, and connect with nature in a peaceful setting.

Activity

Join our expert guides Tom Rayner, a Horticultural Team Leader and Student Macey Webb who will lead us on a nature walk through the gardens as we explore the local wildlife, plants and fungi that thrive in the autumn months. You will learn how to identify different species of mushrooms, their importance to biodiversity, and gain a deeper appreciation for the natural environment around us. This leisurely walk is an excellent way to unwind while deepening your knowledge of nature.

This activity is a gentle walk but may involve uneven ground, so please be mindful.

There will be vegan snacks on offer at the end of the walk:)

What you will need

Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes suitable for walking on ground which may be wet, and dress for the weather. Long sleeves and trousers are recommended. Bring a water bottle, and don't forget your waterproofs or sun protection depending on the forecast. All materials and guides for the nature walk will be provided.

Optional Fun Extras!

If you are interested we will also look out for any wax caps on the grounds to add them to a survey by Plantlife. Waxcaps are an indicator of rare, species-rich grassland. Knowing where waxcaps and other grassland fungi are thriving helps us pinpoint where fragments of ancient meadows survive, so we can protect them for the future. Here is the link to download the app to track wax caps: https://www.plantlife.org.uk/waxcapwatch/#why-we-need-you-to-find-waxcaps.

We often capture photos or videos during our activities to promote green spaces at the University. You will have the option to opt out on the day.
