Riding For All Abilities

Whether you are a complete beginner or have ridden all of your life, the Riding Club has something to offer you. When you sign up for lessons, you will be placed into a group with others of a similar ability to yourself on Facebook (these groups will be organised at the beginning of the Autumn Term) and will head off to one of the local riding schools for lessons. Each group will have a few drivers, who takes the group to the stables as well as joining in with the lesson. We will do our best to place you into a group who want to ride on the same day as you, as frequently as you and who want to achieve the same out of their lessons as you do. If you have never ridden before we will be hosting Give it a Go sessions at the beginning of the year so you can try out the sport!

Progress through the Club

Weekly Lessons:

Our club provides lessons for riders of all abilities at Urchinwood Manor:  Urchinwood Manor EC

Beginners will learn a variety of techniques including how to mount and lead the house, halt-walk and walk-halt transitions, as well a changing the rein down the centre line, 20m circles in walk and dismounting from the horse.

Novice riders will learn how to develop their current techniques, including how to canter without stirrups, ride a 20m circle in center, show some lengthened strides in trot as well as changing the rein using two half 10m circles.

Our more advanced weekly groups will develop their techniques, including leg yielding, 4 loop serpentine in trot, demonstrating the principles of riding the horse on the bit, medium canter and medium trot.

Development Squad:

A team of 12 riders who train every week at Urchinwood Stables. It offers a chance for those who are experienced riders but may not have the competition experience that is required for BUCS teams. Being in the Development Squad provides the riders with training and competition opportunities including Varsity.

Information regarding how to sign up for trials will be available at the Fresher's Fair and posted on our Facebook page.

BUCS:

The University of Bristol Riding Club have a history of success in BUCS competitions, regularly qualifying for regional finals as well as reaching the National Championships.

BUCS competitions consist of 3 rounds: 4 mini-leagues over the winter term, regionals in spring term for the winner and then nationals for the regional champions. Each event consists of a dressage test followed by a jumping round on a horse that the competitor has not ridden before. Before each section, you are given time to work-in - 7 minutes before dressage and 5 minutes before jumping. Each round is based on the skill of the rider rather than the ability of the horse. The competitions are run at riding schools, so there is no need to have your own horse.

Team trials are held a couple of weeks into the Autumn Term and sign up sheets will be available at the Fresher's Fair and posted on our Facebook page.

Previously, members of the Club have trained on Monday evenings with Australian Eventing Team member and Badminton Horse Trials winner Paul Tapner at his yard.

Beach Rides & Hacking

There will also be opportunities for beach rides and local hacks throughout the year, with more information on our Instagram page as opportunities arise.

In previous years, hacks included cantering along the beach, swerving in and out of sand dunes or having a calm walk and chat with your friends!

Socials

Socials are run throughout the year and are a great place to meet like-minded people or, if you are new to riding, to come and ask questions and get to know everyone. We also will be hosting a Christmas Dinner for members close to the end of the first term. Socials can be anything from club nights and pub nights to film nights and cocktail evenings or a chill coffee, we try to involve everyone as much as possible so if you have any ideas just let us know!
